Arizona
Licensed Arizona residents must complete 40 hours of CE during the license term if the resident also produced insurance as a non-resident in another state. If you’re an Arizona resident and you do not produce insurance in another state, CE is not necessary. Non-resident licensed insurance professionals who are in good standing do not need to complete CE training. Exceptions include:

Arkansas

All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years, beginning on the date the license was issued. Two of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
Limited Lines Automobile Insurance Agent
All license holders must complete 20 CE hours every two years, beginning on the date the license was issued. Two of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
Colorado
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training, 18 hours in major lines and 3 hours in miscellaneous. Courses cannot be repeated in a 2-year period.
Connecticut
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
6 hours must be in major lines and 15 lines may be miscellaneous. Dual licensees must take 24 hours for each type of license.
Delaware
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training. All public adjusters must take 12 CE hours every two years, including 3 hours of ethics training.
Florida
During the first 6 years of licensure, all license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. After 6 years of licensure, license holders must complete 20 CE hours every two years.
Georgia
All license holders must complete 15 CE hours every year in major lines. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training. Professionals licensed for more than 20 years must take 10 hours of CE annually in major lines, and 3 hours must consist of ethics training.
Hawaii
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
Idaho
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
Illinois
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
Indiana

Life Settlement
All life settlement license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Nine of the 24 hours must include ethics training, life settlement and life insurance (3 hours each).
Louisiana
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training and an additional 3 hours must consist of flood education.
Maine

Maryland

All license holders must complete 30 CE hours every two years. Two of the 24 hours must include ethics training or consumer protection training. Adjusters must complete 10 hours of CE, including 2 hours of ethics training, every 2-year renewal term.
Utah
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every renewal term. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training, and half of the hours must be spent in the classroom or an approved online classroom equivalent.
Vermont
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every 2-year renewal term, ending on March 31st of odd years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training. P&C producers must complete a one-time flood insurance course for 3 hours. Long term care producers must complete additional CE training.
Virginia
Single license holders must complete 16 CE hours every two years. Two of the 24 hours must include laws and regulations training. Multiple license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years, including two CE hours in laws and regulations training.
Washington
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every 2-year renewal term (even years). Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
West Virginia
Most license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training. For limited lines, completion of 6 CE hours for every 2-year term is required. Half of the 6 hours must include ethics training.
Wisconsin
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years (even years). Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training.
Wyoming
All license holders must complete 24 CE hours every two years. Three of the 24 hours must include ethics training. No more than 12 of the hours may be company sponsored. Out-of-state certifications do not satisfy the CE requirement.

Providing quality service to insurance customers rests on the ability of the agent and adjuster. They need to be able to provide the right products and knowledgeable service while abiding by the laws and regulations defined by the home state. This includes understanding the products and the needs of the customer, as well as keeping up with the state’s current laws and regulations. Continuing education helps insurance agents and adjusters continually update their industry knowledge — it also assures their livelihood, as license terms typically last only two years and require renewal upon expiration.
Continuing education is an easy way for insurance professionals to maintain their professional standing while improving their ability to provide expert service at the same time. Every state has its own license renewal and continuing education requirements. Although some states give professionals with more experience greater leeway after an extended period of time in the insurance industry, other states require a certain number of continuing education hours prior to the renewal of the license. The most typical requirement is 24 hours of continuing education, with three of the 24 hours pertaining to ethics.
The good news is that keeping your continuing education requirements current has never been easier. The vast majority of states permit online study and testing, making it easy for busy professionals to successfully meet their state’s requirements. In most cases, as long as you have an Internet connection, you can keep your licensure in good standing for years to come. However, classroom learning is sometimes a state requirement and successfully completing an in-person seminar is necessary for renewal.
Every state has an insurance department that provides clear guidelines for insurance industry continuing education. Make sure to review your state requirements, and check with your applicable state before assuming that you have completed them. In addition, because many agents sell products across state lines, be sure to check if the areas you’re planning to sell insurance will cover out of state continuing education requirements.
Not every state will let a professional carry over extra hours into a new term, and not every state will accept another state’s CE hours in the event you change residency. Checking for these regulations in advance is wise.
